Fido
One word Review: Mmmmmerrrgggwwrrraaarrrr
There is no doubt that I'm a sucker for Zombie films. When I heard the premise for Fido, domesticated Zombies in 50's America, it sounded good to me. I was hoping for Shawn of the Dead level parody, unfortunately, Fido falls a bit short. It is a decent comedy, but not quite at level I was hoping for.
The basic story is a follows: Replace World War 2 with a war against Zombies. A brilliant scientist working for Zomcom, a "zombie technology" company discovers how to kill Zombies (the head shot), but also how to control them (special collars). With these special collars the Zombie's urge to kill is removed and they become docile albeit stupid slaves. Move slightly forward to the nuclear family, suburban 50s. In this world we follow the story of Timmy, a young boy who befriends his family's new Zombie.
This movie is clearly a mash up of the boy and his dog genre with the zombie movie. The premise is funny, and it does make for funny scenes, but I think the movie relies too much on the premise being funny and not enough on the movie actually being funny. For me, the humour of the premise worked for the first half an hour, but then it really needed something else. Unfortunately, it never arrived.
The plot is simplistic and predictable. There are occasional surprises, but I found that in the end it did not really add up to a great film. If you think the premise is funny, then the movie is probably worth a watch, but if you don't, I'm not sure this movie is going to do anything for you.
